Finding Vintage Harley Davidson Parts

By Ryan Johnson

If you own a Harley, you may at some point need to purchase spares after a breakdown or to make modifications to your bike. This can be a simple process with modern machines and they are available for most of the models on the road. If you own an older motorcycle you will need to locate vintage Harley Davidson Parts to keep your machine running well.

There are a couple of places for you to look when trying to find spares to fit to your vintage bike. Locating obscure parts may often be time consuming and often the item will be unavailable and cannot be found. The first thing to do is take a decent picture of the spare part you are hunting for and this will allow you to compare it to any replacements you may find.

There are a large number of web based suppliers that specialize in genuine Harley spares and other components. These suppliers will have massive stocks of spares for some modern day machines and many older motorcycles. The adverts will usually show a photograph of the part and a full description with its price and other general information.

A Harley dealership is probably the best place to visit when you are searching for items. Most of these dealers will keep huge inventories of spares and some will have very old or rare spares which may not be listed. If that they do not have the bits that you require they will usually advise you where you can continue your search.

Scrap dealers and junk metal yards are a good place to look when you are searching and they can save you money. Many older bikes often end up in these yards and outdoor compounds. Some firms will remove any items that can be sold on, and will keep them in the stock room, and in other cases you may have to strip bikes down so taking along tools will be necessary.

Bike owners clubs and Harley associations can also be a good place to find rare spares. Many of the members will trade spares and if you are a member you may benefit from discount and get first choice. Some clubs will have a web page so sending a short email with your requests will often produce results.

When you have purchased your items and have fitted them it can be useful to keep the old bits. These may then be refurbished or repaired and sold to fellow bikers trying to find scarce items. Some components may need a safety inspection after repair, especially brake components and gas tanks.

If you do need to replace items it is preferable to use genuine Harley products. Many companies produce aftermarket spares which will do the job but using these can affect the value of a bike should it be sold. Another thing to consider is that some owners clubs will not allow you to enter a machine into shows if they are not factory original.
