Useful Information Regarding Vinyl Liner Leak Detection

By Christopher Thompson

There are many problems that result from the presence of a leak in the liner of vinyl pools. Repairing and remediating these leaks can be very costly. When a leak occurs beyond a certain level in a pool that has a cover, the cover can damaged a lot. The cover develops wrinkles as a result of pulling away from the pool surface. The only way to prevent the wrinkles is to never allow water in the structure to go below a certain point by refilling appropriately. This is worth knowing about Vinyl liner leak detection.

The floor of the pool can also be damaged if the leakage continues happening for a long period. Damages such as flaking and cracking can also occur to the walls of the pool due to leakage. The seriousness of the damage is usually dependent on the level of leakage and the duration it is left to continue happening. Finding the source of the water loss and fixing it as soon as possible is very important.

There are several indicators of leaks in pool. For in-ground pools, a majority of leaks happen around skimmers, drains, fittings and the liner. One ought to pay close attention to leaks which cause water drop to a certain level at which water seemingly stabilizes. This implies that a leak exists at a particular point above the level where the water stabilizes.

Normally, vinyl pools are installed with step by screwing plastic strips into liners through cuts made. The step is screwed over gaskets. One can easily see the strips where the steps start and where liners end. Leaks take place at the bottom or sides of the steps. One needs to wear and mask and get into the water to investigate the leak. When one finds voids that have tiny leaves sucked into, it means that leakage occurs at that point.

Leakage also occurs at the point where pool lights are installed. The installation of pool lights is done over a gasket using a circular plat that is screwed tightly into liners. Leakage can occur at the location where the light cable leaves the pool. This problem can be prevented by using alternative methods of installing pool lights where leakage does not occur.

Leakage in the lining material is determined by turning off the pump and any time clocks. One should then mark the level of water using duct tape or a marker pen. The pool should then be left unused for the next 24 hours. In case there is significant drop in the water level, it means that there is some level of leakage. One should factor in normal evaporation.

In case there is a leakage, there will be a significant drop in the water level. Detecting a leakage in the liner requires inspecting every inch of the pool one by one. There may be multiple locations of leakage present and until they are all repaired, there will still be leakage.

If one cannot handle this job, they should hire a professional. Professionals are experienced enough to be able to find leaks much faster. Well-hidden leaks can however take several hours or days to locate.
