How To Safely Apply Insect Repellent

By Roger Fisher

Mosquitoes and other insects can give you a terrible outdoor experience. They even invade your house and make it inhabitable. In some cases, they will turn you into a victim while ignoring everyone else. The best solution is to use insect repellent instead of living in a perpetual war with these insects. However, even the best repellents will disappoint if their application is poor. Here are tips that will unveil the magic in repellents.

Use the sunscreen as your base. It is applied before repellents to protect the skin since you will be outdoors. There are repellents that combine sunscreens to form a single product. They are not recommended even by CDC. The reason is that you will need more sunscreen than repellent. This means that you end up applying more repellent which will be a waste and might harm your body.

The repellents should be applied evenly and smoothly on particular parts of the skin. This does not mean that you soak in repellents. It is meant to fight the aggressive mosquitoes and ticks that sometimes spread the debilitating diseases. They are so industrious that they will smell the exposed areas before you even notice. When spraying or applying, enter an inch into the sleeves and other covered areas.

There is no need to spray areas that are already covered. Outdoor specialists recommend the use of long sleeve clothing to keep away the bugs. But these insects crawl up the sleeves into areas that are not sprayed. Some covered areas can be very sensitive and may react with the chemicals used. It is also a waste in some cases because the insects cannot get to these areas.

Other than spraying on the sensitive areas, you should spray on your hands and use your thumb to apply. The most sensitive areas include the nose, ears and eyes. Open wounds, cuts and bruises should be protected before spraying. If the repellents get into these areas, they will cause a lot of damage. Wash your hands thoroughly after application.

Pay attention to knees, ankles and other folds on your body. These spots are convenient and attractive to ticks because they can hop easily from ground level or plants. They do not capture a lot of oils or repellents, making them easy targets. Without spraying, they become easy targets and will negate the spraying of all other places. You will still be exposed if necessary attention is not provided.

Be cautious when applying repellents on kids. Their skins are delicate and likely to react negatively with your skin. According to CDC, children below 2 months should have repellents applied. Even when these children are older, direct spraying is not recommended. Instead, spray the repellent on your hands and apply on the child. Other precautions are as you would for adults.

Repellents should only be reapplied if the need arises. The average repellent will provide hours of protection. However, due to individual chemistry, there are people who attract more insects or the same insects more than others. If you are swimming or exposed to rain, the repellents will wear off the skin. If the insects begin to bite, it is a cue to reapply. It could also mean that your chosen brand is not as effective.
