How To Make Your Talent Shine As A Freelance Voice Over Artist

By Debra Sanders

There's an ocean of difference between being born with a great voice and becoming an accomplished vocal performer. While the former can mostly be attributed to luck, the latter does require plenty of practice and hard work to achieve. It should thus come as a relief to know that there are some tips you could use to fast-track your journey towards success as a freelance voice over artist Los Angeles.

Similar to how you'd stretch your muscles in preparation for a workout, your vocal cords also need a warm up before practice. Be sure to explore various sounds, scales and mouth openings while doing this. This will not only improve your utilization of air flow and breath, but also minimize your likelihood of straining your voice.

The extent to which you fill your lungs is what determines how much control you have over the sound you produce. With this in mind, make a habit of inhaling using your diaphragm in such a way that your belly expands outwards, rather than your chest. Mastering this technique fully may take weeks of practice, but your consistency here will be rewarded with more capacity and stamina.

Recording your voice and listening to it is the most practical way to check your progress over time. Whether you use your smartphone, PC or an online recorder, the goal here is to assess the sound you produce as it's projected to an audience and see where improvements need to be made. You probably won't like what you hear at first, but keeping an open mind will help you grow your confidence with time.

No matter how good your training strategy is, it won't be of much help if you try going it alone all the way. It's for this reason that you should consider hiring a vocal coach at some point. Besides helping you fix mistakes before they become habits, they will also ensure you progress in the right direction. Online tutorials can also make a difference if one-on-one coaching proves too expensive.

Sound is a product of the rapid vibration of the membranes in your vocal cords. These function best when they're sufficiently lubricated, so make sure to drink plenty of water across the course of each day. Consuming foods rich in moisture will also keep you hydrated, as will abstinence from coffee, alcohol, and other dehydrating substances.

The better your sleeping habits are, the more energy you'll have for your practice sessions and performances. Sleep will also help your vocal cords grown and adapt to your training routine. So do whatever's necessary to ensure you always get a full 8 hours of sleep every night. If this proves challenging or insufficient to see you wake up feeling refreshed, see a doctor immediately.

Staying fit is always a good idea, but even more so when you're hoping to become an artist. Your ability to last through a performance lasting one or several hours generally depends on your physical shape. No matter how important other elements seem, don't be tempted to discount the significance of physical training in your strategy.
