History Of El Salvador Flag

By Sisi Styles

About 3000 BC, nomadic Nahuatl Amerindians, originally from present-day Mexico, migrated to Central America. The Pipil Amerindians were living in the region now known as El Salvador at the time of the Spanish conquest. They were an agricultural people, with a civilization similar to that of the Aztecs, except that the Pipil had abolished human sacrifice. In addition to the Pipil, two smaller groups, the Pocomans, and the Lenca lived in the area.

The Spanish conquistador Pedro de Alvarado arrived in the region in 1524. He founded the colony's first capital near present-day Suchitoto before it was moved to it present location a few years later. In 1811, Father José Matías Delgado organized a revolt against Spain, but it was quickly quelled. 10 years later, on September 15, 1821, El Salvador and the rest of the Central American colonies won independence from Spain.

As other countries banners in Central America, the banner of El Salvador uses blue and white, on the grounds that these were the shades of the United Provinces of Central America.

Like the banner of the Federal Republic of Central America, the banner of El Salvador has three equivalent groups of blue on the top and base, and white in the middle. El Salvador's banner uses a more profound blue than that of the Central American banner.

The main version of El Salvador's national flag, used by government organizations, has the coat of arms of El Salvador centered on the white stripe. The coat of arms has a triangle with five volcanoes, representing the members of the former Central American union. The Phrygian cap, a red hat, tops a staff and represents liberty. Behind the cap is a sun with beaming rays, encircled by the date of El Salvadorian independence, September 15, 1821. At the top of the triangle is a rainbow, symbolizing peace.

Encompassing the triangle are five blue and white banners, which speak of the countries of Central America. Beneath the triangle, the motto of El Salvador is composed on a parchment: God, Union, Liberty. The branches are partitioned into fourteen segments, speaking of the fourteen Departments of El Salvador. Enclosing the greater part of this is the full name of the country, Republica de El Salvador en la America Central, which means the Republic of El Salvador in Central America.
