Main Information On Disaster Survival Kit

By Tammie Caldwell

It is important that people are prepared in cases of emergency. Natural disasters take place all around the world and can cause major destruction, as well as death. In these situations, there is often limited resources available to people. This is why a disaster survival kit is recommended. These kits are essential a collection of basic necessities that may be needed in the event of an emergency.

Families and individuals need to prepare these ahead of time. The need for these can strike at any moment. If there is an emergency evacuation, people must be able to readily grab the essentials. Rarely is there time to search or shop for supplies. After these situations, especially when there are natural disasters, people will have to survive on their own. They will supply all the food, water and necessities they need. It is suggested that people pack enough for at least three days work, although they may have to survive on their own for longer.

Relief workers and officials will try to be on scene as soon as possible. However, it may be difficult to reach everyone quickly. It could take hours to days for help to be available. This is worth noting while putting together a kit. Also keep in mind that sewage, gas, electricity and water are not usually available during these times. The kit should have items that help people to survive with limited resources.

Maintain the kits. Contents have to be safe to use in times of need. Canned food need a dry, cool storage space. Boxed food does best in metal or plastic containers that can keep away pests and prolong the shelf life. Foods chosen must not go bad quickly and should be replaced if they do.

Water supplies and stored food are to be switched out every six months. Make sure to take note of the date that the containers were originally stored. It is important to reconsider the necessities of these kits each year and update the kit accordingly. Store things in airtight plastic bags and place the kit in easy-to-carry containers like camping backpacks or trashcans.

It is recommended that people have one of these at their work, home and in their vehicle. This is essential because it can be difficult to predict when there is a disaster and the kit may be needed. The ones at home should feature food, water and supplies that will last a minimum of three days. This should be placed in an area everyone knows that is easy to access in evacuation situations.

Kits for work should offer enough to last a minimum of 25 hours. These are usually filled with water, food, medications and other major necessities. It is recommended that people pack comfortable shoes in the event they need to travel or walk long distances. These should also be in containers or bags that can be accessed quickly and easily. Vehicle survival kits may feature first aid kit, radio, sleeping bags, ice scraper, blankets, extra batteries, water, food, warm clothes, shovel and flashlights.

Packages are expected to differ based on needs of individuals or families. Certain manufacturers and retailers sell starter packs with the basics. However, people should strive to build or customize their own.
