As a parent, we are continually looking for ways to best arm our children with the skills necessary to have happy and successful lives. With that said, I recently read an article from Parenting Magazine about the importance of art education. I will soon be a mother or two and as my children get older, I feel the weight of the significance of a well-rounded education.
Even with all of my reading, it is not often that I am really inspired by these types of articles, but this one was a rare exception. To give you and idea, the main theme of the article was the weighted pressure of test scores and how it is affecting our youth.
It then began to suggest ways to ease stress and encourage creativity among school age children. And what better way to do that than with promoting and teaching different types of art within our schools.
Art has been used throughout time has as a way to promote and visualize personal values and emotions. In doing this, we are allowing children who are often timid in a traditional classroom setting the chance to open up about something that they have created and are passionate about. My favorite point was that it actually allows kids to learn by doing instead of simply hearing a lecture. Art has proven to increase confidence and allows a certain level of release and relaxation.
Art education has also proven to be a long-term benefit for people entering into the business world, as creativity is one of the most sought out skills among high-ranking companies.
Overall, the research on the subject proved to be very eye opening. I believe it is important to that we continue to make art education a part of the curriculum in an effort to promote a well-rounded, imaginative new generation. It will also offer an outlet to some of the other pressures related to the modern curriculum.
