By Elizabeth Powell

Understanding the difference between thriller and mystery books is the first step to writing interesting novels. Thrillers define preventive measures before a crime takes place while books written on mysterious events follow the actions of an intelligent protagonist who provides clues for solving crimes. Whether you intend to write thrillers or mysterious stories, learning success tips from popular mystery thriller authors is vital. Below are few things to consider when writing novels in these genres.

Grab the reader's attention in the first chapter especially the first line. There are various factors you need to consider to create a strong hook. First, pay attention to details at each step. The first line should grab the readers interest to find out more about the story. Make use of questions readers want to be answered. A good story contains dramatic events and conflicting discoveries that affect the lives of the main characters.

Engage readers in solving mysteries by providing clues. Make sure clues are not too obvious to maintain suspense throughout the story. Add characters, both honest and suspicious ones to act together. Let readers distinguish truthful characters from those telling lies.

It is always good to have different explanations. For instance, add more than one suspect in mystery or thriller events. If the story is based on natural events, including both natural and supernatural explanations for the disappearance of a character. This tactic makes the entire reading experience interesting. Readers take up the role of detectives by identifying those responsible.

Novels become boring if the events, outcomes, and characters seem obvious. Distract the attention of the reader from getting answers to various questions by using red herring. Also known as clues, red herrings lead investigations to another step. Readers focus more on finding the truth as they follow the author's explanation. Add a suspicious character into the story to divert reader's attention from discovering the truth.

Novels become interesting when characters give contradicting statement. Create suspense by adding characters who sound bizarre or use unexpected language in the story. Remember, it is a crime novel where investigations are taking place. Make the reader follow up by using characters who are not ready to give evidence that may solve the problem.

Language is a factor you need to consider before drafting a novel. It is natural you want to become a successful author. Consider writing novels in settings that engage readers and write events in descriptive format. Take time to learn more about characterization. Place your characters in a manner your audience can follow without getting bored.

Begin your chapters with interesting discoveries or actions unexpected by the readers. Good thriller authors use settings, discoveries and reveal facts to open chapters. Your chapters should get the attention of the reader and encourage continuous reading. Conclude your story with answers readers want to know or facts about the characters. Your conclusion should make the reader want to read the next book.
