Normally, bad design is due to many aspects. However, the main one is mistakes of computation. Erroneous theories and not accounting for the weight which the structure will be needed to support are the other aspects.

The use of inaccurate data to calculate various aspects of the structure can also be a major cause of future collapse of a building. Impulsive stresses often have catastrophic effects that must be taken care of during the time of construction or maintenance. Improper choice of construction material is also a key reason why buildings fail.

Lack of information of or misinterpretation of various properties of construction materials can also later lead to catastrophe. Engineers typically have the responsibility of taking care of the building design. That means that if future structural failures happen due to bad design, they take the blame. This is because coming up with the design of the structure and making sure that it is adhered to during the construction process is the work of engineers.

Faulty construction is the other source of the buildings to fail. The major source of structural failure is faulty construction. Here, the engineer responsible for the construction is still at fault. The building is supposed to be assessed by the engineer to ensure that everything is done as it was planned. Substandard construction practices and use of substandard construction materials can happen in a case where the inspection is lax.

For example, salt sand may be used to make concrete without appropriate inspection and supervision. The steel specified during design of the building may also be switched with inferior one. Inappropriate tightening torque of nuts, overemployment of drift pin to make holes line up and bad welds are other practices of defective construction that may lead to failure later.
