Ocean Conservation Concerns Everybody, Not Just Scientists And Marine Biologists

By Peter Stevens

It seems hard to believe that, in the face of rising sea temperatures and melting icecaps, there are those who still refuse to consider that the human species is having a negative impact on the earth. They put it all down to political chicanery and hysterical liberals with an agenda. Many of those climate change deniers however, will concede that ocean conservation is not a bad thing, if it doesn't cause them too much trouble.

If you are concerned about the environment and the impact you are making on it, there are steps you can take, and teach your children to take, to minimize your carbon footprint. Every time you decide to walk or bike to get where you need to go, instead of using a gasoline fed car, you are making a difference. Reducing your use of electricity by turning off lights you don't need and turning the thermostat up or down is one small step in the right direction.

Plastic is convenient and many people use it without thinking about its impact on the earth. When this material gets in the oceans, it can destroy marine life and last for years. There are actually islands in the Pacific and Atlantic that consist of nothing but the trash left behind by the human species. If you take pains to avoid littering, recycle, use cloth bags for shopping, and reusable water bottles, you will make a difference.

Beaches are national treasures for every country lucky enough to have them. Many visitors however are careless about how they treat these beautiful stretches of land and water. You can teach your children to leave the beaches the way they found them, to refrain from pulling coral and rocks off the ocean floor, and to become active in community beach cleanup days.

Eating seafood is great as long as you avoid the temptation of delicacies created from endangered wildlife. You should refuse to consider anything in a restaurant or market except sustainable seafood. Coral necklaces, shark's teeth, and tortoiseshell combs are interesting objects in many beach side shops, but purchasing any of them will send the wrong message to your children. You need to explain that exploiting marine populations is not acceptable

Pet owners need to read labels and choose sustainable seafood for pet diets. If you have an indoor cat, never flush the litter. The pathogens can get into water sources and harm marine life. When choosing fish for a tank, avoid wild saltwater fish, and never dump aquarium contents into the ocean.

One way to make your conservation concerns heard is by contacting your government representatives when bills are coming up. You can keep up with how they vote on crucial matters and teach you children to follow Congress as well. Your children will notice when you support only representatives who are serious about protecting the environment.

Conserving the oceans is everyone's responsibility. If humans destroy these vital waters, life on earth will not be sustainable. It is never too late to take a stand in defense of the environment.
