It is not unusual to see an old doll with dirty, matted or tangled hair. Before you attempt to wash the wig, you should find what it is made of. Synthetic hair can be shampooed using baby shampoo or some other gentle shampoo. You can even use fabric softener. It's important not to get the cap wet though because that can shrink it. You don't want to get the doll wet either.

It might take a tapestry needle or hatpin to comb mohair. If the wig needs an overall comb out, sectioning the hair and working on one section at a time may be necessary. Very fine wigs can be combed with a flea comb. Some collectors like to use pet combs to work with wigs. Embroidery or tapestry needles are good implements for separating and rejuvenating old curls.

Cloudy eyes can be remedied with the use of Renaissance wax, clock oil, or machine oil. Using vegetable oil on a composition doll is a bad idea. You need to cover the rest of the doll to keep oil off of it. Some oils can act as paint remover. Some collectors use nail polish to eliminate cloudy eyes. This can be effective, but it is also irreversible.

Orvus soap is inexpensive and a great way to clean bisque dolls. You can find it in feed stores and tack supply houses. Using Renaissance wax is another excellent way to clean bisque and composition dolls. This is the same wax museums use to conserve their collections. You may have to look online for a restoration supply store to get the wax, but it's worth it.

If you have a doll with missing pieces and don't want to take it to a professional, you can try modeling compound to repair it. Gourd artists use the air dry kind, and this works well for restoring damaged dolls. It doesn't shrink when you mold it, so applying extra layers should not be necessary. Large art supply stores usually stock the compound.

Once you have restored the missing part, it will have to be painted. It's important not to try and paint the whole doll, you just want to apply pigment to the section you replaced. Most serious collectors emphasize the importance to using a barrier that makes it possible to remove the paint at some point.

Collecting dolls can be a lot of fun. You don't have to spend tons of money on them either. Finding one that needs some tender loving care is one way to make the hobby special.
