A Short Discussion About Drug Abuse Prevention

By Roger Gray

The world today is a lot different than it was twenty years ago, the development of computers and internet is big proof of how the world is much more sophisticated and dramatic. There are virtually no more secrets, whether they be personal or in the limelight. The advancement of technology is not the only way we can tell things are much different. It is important to realize that the world of medicine has grown in leaps and bounds, as well. Because of the power of modern day medications, it is important to be knowledgeable in drug abuse prevention.

It is often said that an addiction started when a person has been prescribed a pain reliever and the patient did not follow instructions. They often took more than they should for longer than they should. This is called self-medicating. This often causes the person to become dependent on the medication to accomplish what they need to do from day to day.

Controlling pain is essential in living a full life. Pain is often the reason many people are restricted in their day to day activities. It also puts undo stress on the body which, in turn, can cause even more problems. To decrease pain in their patients, physicians will prescribe an opioid based pain reliever.

Most of the pain relievers that are prescribed to patients are opioid based, making them very addicting and sometimes deadly if not taken correctly. Stronger pain medications will cause stronger addictions which also means that the withdrawals are strong and deadly.

Another way some people are turned on to drugs is by peer pressure. When a teenager is faced with either doing drug or getting shunned by their peers, most will end up using drugs. It takes a strong-willed person to say no to those they care about.

There are no clear answers as to how to stop drug use but educating people on the dangers of both prescription and street drugs is probably the first step. It is very important to teach young people what drugs can do to their bodies and their health. Street drugs, such as heroin and methamphetamines, can be addicting from the very first hit. Those drugs are also very lethal.

Arming our young generation with the information that will help them is one of the most important things we can do to deter the use of street drugs and prescription medications. Education and self-respect play a big role in decreasing the chances that they will even try abusing drugs.

When it comes to deterring someone from abusing drugs, it is vital to direct their attention to the good things in life. Education and other positive aspects of life will help decrease the number of people that initially try drugs, therefore, help lower the chances of getting addicted. There are many programs for those that need to conquer their addictions.
