By Larry Olson

If you play an electric guitar you will usually use a tube or transistor amplifier and these will require regular maintenance and faults rectifying. When a fault occurs, you will need to look for reliable guitar amp repair to get the equipment working again. There are some very important things for you to consider before having work done to your equipment and a little care is needed.

Many different amplifiers are available and each one will have different modes and functions. Amp heads are commonly used by the professional players and these will need a speaker to be attached to hear the audio. The other type of amplifier is a combo unit which will house a speaker and these are popular for amateur players and bedroom guitarists.

Vacuum tube amps should have a yearly service to make sure they operate efficiently and safely. Most gigging guitarists will carry spare tubes when they are playing live shows in case they need replacing. When you change a valve it is imperative that the new one is matched to the old one to avoid damaging the amplifier. Any serious faults with tube amps should be fixed by a professional repair technician to ensure the job is done correctly.

A transistor amplifier is a little easier to work on but they will still need a regular inspection. Small problems and faults can be fixed by the amateur using some everyday tools and the suitable spare parts. When the problems are more serious it is better to give the amp to a professional repairer and most instrument stores will have a workshop where this type of work is carried out.

If you carry out your own amplifier repairs you will have to locate the parts and these are available from most guitar stores or web based retailers. Always make sure that the parts are suitable for your model of amp and that they are covered by a manufacturer warranty. Refurbished parts such as speakers, control pots and switches can be fitted after they have been tested for safe operation.

When you are buying replacement parts for your amplifier there are a couple of important things to think about. Always try to use original factory made spares if they available rather than aftermarket spares made by another manufacturer. Due to the rarity and value of some vintage amps it is advisable to use an authorized dealer to carry out any repairs.

There are some useful books and DVD's on the market which are a good purchase for amateur amplifier repairers. These guides will feature step by step instructions on how to carry out basic repairs and maintenance. When you have completed the work on your equipment it is advisable to have the amp inspected by an electrician to ensure it will operate safely.

The costs of repairing an amplifier will be depend on the type of fault and what parts are needed to put things right. A broken cable or bad solder joint can be repaired for a few bucks and this will rise to hundreds or thousands for rebuilds and major repairs to vintage models. When you have to send equipment away to be fixed it is worth noting that shipping can sometimes be expensive and this should be factored into your budget.
