ADHD In Children Can Be Managed Successfully

By Gary Young

In the past, youngsters that struggled to learn was simply seen as dumb and those that displayed unruly behaviour were simply described as naughty. Such kids were often punished and many were shunned by teachers and peers alike. Very often, the parents of such children did not know what to do. Today, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a recognized medical condition. ADHD in children from Dallas to Singapore can be treated and sufferers can lead normal lives.

ADD, as this condition is also known, causes a wide variety of symptoms. Many youngsters with this condition cannot concentrate for any length of time and they struggle to assimilate new knowledge. Many patients display symptoms of depression. Others exhibit anti social behaviour and often act in an aggressive manner. Incessant talking is also a very common symptom. In extreme cases the child will regress into destructive fits of anger.

When parents or teachers learn that a child has been diagnosed with ADD they immediately think that a drug such as Ritalin will be prescribed, that the child will take his, drugs and that the problem will be something of the past. This is not the case. Drugs can help alleviate some of the symptoms of ADD, but not all of them. Many children do not react well to the drugs and experience severe side effects.

ADD is best managed and treated with a holistic management plan. One important component of such a plan is regular exercise. Experts advise that kids with ADD should exercise at least thirty minutes per day, preferably in the outdoors. Exercise releases serotonin and dopamine in the brain which help improve the concentration of the child. Exercise also contributes towards the development of positive attitude.

Another important component of any treatment plan for kids with ADD is to ensure that they enjoy at least eight hours of quality sleep each day. Many patients struggle to fall asleep and this just aggravates the symptoms. Parents are advised to make sure that their children go to bed and wake up in the mornings at set times. Their rooms need to be dark and there must be no distractions of any kind.

A balanced diet plays a vital role in the successful management of ADD. It is common for ADD patients to avoid food for long periods only to then binge on anything they can lay their hands on. Instead, parents should make sure that their kids eat several smaller meals each day. Each meal should include some protein. Fresh vegetables and fruit, as well as fish such as sardines and tuna are all highly recommended.

Many kids benefit greatly from some form of psychological treatment. An experienced therapist can help them to manage their symptoms, to control their behaviour and to understand the condition that they suffer from. Practising yoga or meditation has also proved to be extremely beneficial. It helps the child to relax, to focus and to concentrate.

Parents and teachers should be on the lookout for signs that a child may be suffering from ADD. The earlier the condition is diagnosed the easier it will be to implement an integrated management plan. There is no reason why sufferers cannot lead full and productive lives.
