With Holistic ADHD Adult Treatment Athens Patients Lead Fulfilling Lives

By Sharon Taylor

There was a time when people that had learning difficulties, struggled to concentrate, failed to finish projects and generally acted in an anti social manner were seen as stupid, lazy and even mad. Only once Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder became an acknowledged medical condition could such people hope for professional help. Today, with ADHD adult treatment Athens sufferers can learn to cope with their condition and to function well in society.

ADD can manifest itself in a variety of ways. Sufferers often find it difficult to learn new skills or to achieve cognitive objectives. In fact, most people associate the condition with learning problems. Some patients also display unruly behaviour, an inability to concentrate and a tendency to jump from one activity to the next without completing any of them. Patients also tend to be fidgety, prone to non stop talking and impatience.

Effectively treating ADD requires a multi disciplinary approach. Some people think that the condition can be controlled by simply swallowing a pill. Medication is indeed part of a holistic approach but in most cases it treats only the symptoms. Some symptoms, such as forgetfulness do not react to medication. Patients also need to be careful to monitor and report side effects of the medication they use.

Exercise is seen as one of the most important components of any plan to treat a patient with ADD. Almost any form of exercise will boost dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain. This, in turn, will help improve the memory, mood and motivation of the patients almost immediately. Experts agree that patients should try and exercise for at least half an hour each day, preferably out of doors.

Taking steps to ensure better quality sleep is also important in the management of this condition. Many patients have problems in this area and a lack of quality sleep aggravates the symptoms. Instead of using yet more medication, patients are encouraged to go to bed at the same time and to get up at the same time each day. They need to make sure that their rooms are completely dark and free of any type of noise or distraction.

Diet can make an enormous difference to ADD patients. They tend to go for long times without eating and then eat everything in sight. A balanced diet that contains sufficient protein and Omega acids such as can be found in certain types of fish and milk products milk can do much to relive their symptoms. Patients are advised to eat regular meals, preferably every three hours, and to use fresh fruit and vegetables as snacks.

Disciplines that promote relaxation, focus and balance are also deemed ideal for patients with this condition. Meditation or yoga is seen as ideal ways in which to improve the concentration of patients, to keep them calm and to help them to focus. Neither of these disciplines involves competition of any sort and patients therefore never feel as if they need to perform.

Once ADD was recognized and acknowledged as a medical condition patients got a second chance at leading balanced lives. Suddenly, they are no longer seen as social misfits that are disruptive and disagreeable. A multi prong approach to a treatment plan seems to work best but the patient needs to cooperate.
