Discover The Advantages Of 24 Hour In Home Care For The Elderly

By Darrell F. Schroyer

As people grow older, even simple daily activities are more difficult to do. A decline in eyesight and hearing can make it impossible to drive safely. This can lead to isolation, loneliness, and feelings of despair. If the individual is suffering with Alzheimer's or dementia, living along can be scary. For those individuals who want to avoid moving into a full-time nursing facility, 24 hour in home care can be the ideal solution.

Allowing an elderly person to remain at home with a live in caregiver gives the family peace of mind. Caregivers provide assistance all day and night, allowing family members to live their own lives knowing their loved one is safe and in good hands. When 24-hour care is necessary, two individuals will usually share the schedule.

Caregivers are available to help with personal grooming tasks. These include dressing, bathing, hair care, and oral hygiene. They can help patients with limited mobility move around the house safely. If the person uses a wheelchair, the caregiver has special training in transferring patients safely to and from the chair.

Remembering to take medication and proper dosing can be a problem with elderly people. Caregivers will remind patients when it is time to take medication and monitor them to make sure they take it. Only registered nurses are allowed to administer medication to patients in some states.

Caregivers are available to assist throughout the day with all cooking and minor light housekeeping. They will follow dietary restrictions when cooking healthy meals for dinner, lunch, and breakfast. They will handle dusting, mopping, vacuuming carpets, washing dishes, doing laundry, taking out the trash, and changing bed linens to ensure the home remains sanitary.

Individuals who provide care are available to provide transportation to doctor's appointments, the bank, the grocery store, the pharmacy, and social events. This eliminates the need to ride the bus or call a taxi. They can even serve as travel companions for family visits or vacations.

One of the most valuable services a live-in caregiver provides is constant companionship. They will keep the elderly person active and engaged. This may include going on walks, playing games, doing puzzles, and participating in other activities that stimulate the mind and keep the body active.

When given a choice, many elderly people prefer to live in the home. The thought of moving into a nursing facility is scary and depressing. Having the chance to live out their later years in familiar surroundings improves quality of life.
