Discover Everything You Wanted To Know About Baby Clothes For Your New Arrival

By Michelle Quiso

Today, baby clothes are available in more adorable designs than ever before, so it can be overwhelming for first-time parents to know where to start when shopping for their new arrival. An infant's tender skin needs to protect, and clothing must also be comfortable and fit properly. This guide provides the basics of everything you wanted to know about baby clothes to help make a selection easier.

It can expected that a baby will need his or her clothes changed several times a day, so a large quantity of readily washable, comfortable outfits will be needed. As a rule of thumb, it's most practical to buy clothes in the child's current size. It's only a matter of time before parents will need to stock up on the next size because infants grow rapidly.

The term "layette" refers to the collection of necessities needed to care for an infant. It includes essential clothing items for play, sleeping, outdoors etc., and also other pieces such as bathing and feeding accessories, and bedding, but the focus here will be on clothing, in particular. All items should provide comfort, and be easy to use and care.

One item a baby will need plenty of are the "onesies" which can be worn either under other clothes for additional warmth. Or alone in hot weather, these have loose "raglan" sleeves and convenient snaps, for easy diaper changing. Several pull-over shirts are also great versatile wardrobe staples. Sleepers with long sleeves and covered feet are the best choice in slumber-wear, and help prevent heat loss during sleep that infants are susceptible.

A baby's feet and head should be kept covered when it's colder, so it's necessary to have a few caps and pairs of booties. Knit caps with no irritating side seam and booties with Velcro fasteners and ankle elastics that are not too tight are the most suitable. When teething starts, babies tend to drool, so a few teething bibs will be needed, as well some larger-sized feeding bibs when the child starts eating solid food.

In the first year, a child should also have a few rompers, one piece suits with shirt and shorts with a snap-up crotch. Also "coveralls" for colder weather, which is like a romper only with long legs and sleeves, and for in-between seasons, "shortalls" can be worn, these have short sleeves but long legs.

During winter, an infant will need to be dressed in three layers of clothing. The first should be a loose, non-absorbent material. The second needs to both trap air and also absorb any perspiration wool or fleece are ideal. And lastly the third layer must be water and wind-resistant to protect the child from the elements, such as nylon or polyester. If the baby seems too warm, a layer can be removed, or zipper undone.

Baby clothes are sized according to age or weight and height groups. The size range considered "infants" ranges from newborn to 24 months or 5-29 pounds and 10-36 inches in height. Most often it's advisable to buy a size larger than what the child is since they usually run small and may not fit for long.
